CSEP conducted a Customer Satisfaction survey in February 2006.
Analysis of data from focus groups, questionnaires and telephone interviews provided information regarding students and parents views and feelings regarding the service CSEP provides. Here are some of the responses below:
Many participants commented on teachers being helpful, providing support with mainstream subjects and homework in addition to being easy to talk to and approachable. Participants feel helpful teachers encouraged motivation, participation and attendance, helping students absorb the support given, which in turn helped them with lessons in their mainstream schools. Participants feel the staff in general help to make them feel welcome and make a conscious effort to provide help and assistance where necessary. Participants feel all staff are willing to help.
“Children say they learn more at CSEP than at school.”
(Parent)
The teaching quality, the level of input and dedication of teachers was another area commented on by participants. They feel the quality of teaching is of a high standard, as teachers engage students in the lesson, making it interesting and fun, whilst consolidating students’ knowledge of their mainstream education.
“I think that the teaching is good.”
(Student)
Participants feel CSEP celebrate their culture in a positive way, displaying art depicting ethnic icons which they can identify with; this also provides a source of education and enlightenment with regards to students’ cultural heritage. This feature makes students and parents feel positive about themselves – encouraging self-esteem and confidence. Participants feel their experience at CSEP is positive, making them feel that they are in the majority and not in the minority, thus fostering an understanding and appreciation of their culture and ethnicity, which is not available through mainstream education.
“My child is not in the minority; cultural identity is taught and celebrated.” (Parent)
Participants were complimentary about the service provided, commenting on the fact that CSEP tries to look at the holistic view; cultural aspects, discipline, and respect, which links in to supporting mainstream education. Parents feel the service provided is of a high standard, and in many cases, they appreciate the service provides an outlet to address mainstream’s inadequate provision for their children.
“My grades have improved.”
(Student)
The teacher student ratio of 1:10 compared with 1:30+ is a positive aspect of the service, commented on by many participants as this helps students receive more one-to-one support. Participants feel this feature is important as the class size of 10 helps students gain an understanding of different views of approaching the subjects; students were also encouraged to help each other, fostering positive working relationships.
“Small class sizes help children who are struggling.”
(Parent)
Parents feel the service provided is excellent value for money as it not only addresses academic attainment but cultural identity, important for students in the minority, whilst enabling students to do something constructive on Saturdays.
“Excellent value for money.”
(Parent)
“I think CSEP is a great service and I don’t know what I would do without their service.”
