Key Stage 2 - Year 6

Age of students: 10 - 11 years
Year 6 students are encouraged to learn at a pace that suits them and ask for help when needed. Students are encouraged to use skills and knowledge from their mainstream school. Formal assessments are conducted to ascertain the level of students in addition to using their Year 5 school reports. Students have the opportunity to prepare for SATs using past papers. Parents and guardians are encouraged to get involved with their child’s learning.

English (Aims and objectives)

Students’ strengths and weakness in literacy are identified. Students are prepared for their Key Stage 2 SATs tests. Revision of key objectives is conducted, focusing on writing skills and comprehension. Students develop skills in speaking, listening, reading and writing based on the National Literacy Strategy. Students are encouraged to read at home to themselves and to their parents or guardians.

Maths (Aims and objectives)

Students’ strengths and weaknesses in Maths are identified. Students are supported in mental Maths and preparation for SATs tests.

Expectations

We expect all students to have high expectations for themselves, persevere and have a good attempt of all work with confidence, whilst feeling safe and secure that help is at hand at all times.

Fun and enjoyment

Various techniques are used to ensure students have fun and enjoyment. Students work as a team; they take part in competitions and problem solving discussions. Text and resources are used to reflect the cultural heritage of students. All students have access to a computer; they are encouraged to make use of ICT facilities in particular websites for research and further knowledge. These techniques are used for students to see that learning is fun.
