EVENT - FEBRUARY 2008
Friday 22nd February 2008
At 5.30am on Friday morning all 48 keen and raring to go attendees were ready to board the coach bound for Liverpool.
After making one stop in the midlands for a comfort / breakfast break the next stop was Liverpool
On arrival at the Merseyside Maritime Museum, Albert Dock, Liverpool L3 4AQ 0151 478 4441 www.liverpoolmuseums.org.uk we were met by Diane Walsh – Learning Development Officer. Diane escorted us in to the International Slavery Museum-Anthony Walker Room Education Suite to delivery her session on Africa & Slavery.
This was a very thought provoking, interactive and stimulating session which involved everyone from our group from the youngest child age 7 to the oldest adult which was a pensioner. The session lasted 90 minutes and we all had the opportunity to touch and examine headdresses, costumes, musical instruments and the more harrowing iron items used to bound, brand and maim the Enslaved Africans during the Transatlantic Slave Trade.
This session was professionally and sensitively delivered by Diane bearing in mind the ages of some of the younger members of the group.
After lunch we proceeded into the main International Slavery Museum which is split into 3 Galleries on the themes
The other major feature was the Freedom & Enslavement Wall before you enter the main Galleries.
Whilst the group toured around the collections and displays they were also reading and digesting the information to complete a Quiz that was specially compiled for the Newsflash: Heritage Trail visit. Please see attached Quiz and download if you wish to test yourself (which you may find difficult to complete without visiting the museum).
5 hours later at the end of the tour we were met by Michelle Charters who kindly provided us with a private historical grass roots briefing (on the coach) about the present black community in Liverpool and what they are striving to do to nurture, educate and empower the community to integrate them on all levels economically and holistically.
