Heritage Trail To International Slavery Museum, Liverpool

Summary

Dan Lyndon Dan Lyndon presented the Pre – Liverpool Heritage Trail workshop at CSEP on behalf of the National Archives from 1.00pm – 3.00pm

Dan Lyndon is an Advanced Skills Teacher at Henry Compton School, Fulham, West London, where he is also the Head of History. Dan has been teaching for 14 years, after graduating from Sussex University having studied History in the School of African and Asian Studies and completing his PGCE at York University. In addition, Dan is the webmaster of www.blackhistory4schools.com, the only website in the UK with teaching materials, articles, weblinks and a blog dedicated to integrating Black and Asian British History into the National Curriculum and www.comptonhistory.com a website with resources for History teachers. Dan is also on the Management Committee of the Black and Asian Studies Association (BASA).

SUMMARY of Workshop delivered by Dan Lyndon 9 th February 2008

  • Introduction;- a timeline of Black British History - putting key individuals in to a chronological framework to re inforce the idea of Black presence since at least Tudor times
  • Elizabeth I and the Blackmoores; - looking at Black Presence in Tudor times, using sources such as the Drake Jewel and from the National Archives Black Presence website
  • Equiano; - more than  just the Middle Passage - using the Education pack produced for the Equiano exhibition at Birmingham Gallery and Museums (available for sale here)  we looked at some of the more unusual aspects of Equiano's life such as his trip to the North Pole
  • Walter Tull; - An Officer, a Footballer and a Gentleman - using the Education pack produced for Northamptonshire Black History Association we learned about the Walter Tull story and recorded a podcast about his experiences playing for Tottenham and Northampton Town as one of the earliest Black professional footballers in Britain.
  • We also looked at the only website in the UK dedicated to the integration of Black British history into the National Curriculum
