Connexions Saturday School PM

There is evidence to suggest that BME young people are at greater risk of lower educational achievement, exclusion, non-attendance, substance misuse, and youth offending.

The aim of the project was to raise the confidence and self-esteem of targeted young people (Years 8,9,10 and 11) including the NEET group (Not in Education, Employment or Training), to enable them to progress to their full potential.

The creation of an afternoon Saturday school addressed our waiting list issue as we were able to give 60 young people over a two year period the opportunity to improve their self worth and become more valued members of the community, leading to opportunities of further education, training and employment.

CSEP targeted BME boys between the ages of 13 – 16 on our waiting list who are at greater risk. The intervention project enabled these young people to learn in a culturally enriched environment, gain self-esteem and confidence.

We intensified our existing facilities to provide, advice and support in education, training and career opportunities to a greater number of young people.

We encouraged our young people to set their own targets and work plan for their future and encouraged them to review their plans, targets and milestones on a regular basis.

The project linked in with the following initiatives:

  • Drug and Alcohol programme
  • Gang and gun crime awareness
  • Mentoring Project
  • Government initiative of targeting young BME boys
  • ICT

Although the project has come to an end, CSEP continues to support these young people.
