Heritage Trail to International Slavery Museum, Liverpool

Guide by Diane Walsh (Learning Development Officer 0151 478 4441)

22nd February 2008

The visit to the international slavery museum consisted of an interactive session called Africa and Slavery, which was delivered by Diane Walsh, the Learning Development Officer. Participants were introduced to African headdresses, costumes and musical instruments to get a sense of African culture, and were also introduced to instruments of restraint and torture as used by those involved in the kidnap and trafficking of Africans.

The group also toured the museum and gathered information for the quiz that they would complete on the journey back to London, and at the end of the tour were given a briefing by Michelle Charters on the Black community in Liverpool, past and present, and what was being done to nurture, educate and empower the community.

Keywords

  • The Northern Link
  • Liverpool’s role in the Transatlantic Slave Trade and how descendants of the enslaved Africans have made a contribution to the heritage and culture of Liverpool

Suggestions

  • More African plays
  • Heritage Walking Trail in Liverpool

Comments

  • This trip was excellent, although (traumatic) needed more time to see the black community.
  • Next time it should be organised for a weekend visit.
