The Unsung Heroes and Heroines of Abolition

Presented by Angelina Osborne

25th July 2007

The bicentenary of the act to abolish the transatlantic slave trade celebrated in great part the efforts of William Wilberforce and to a lesser extent, Thomas Clarkson to end the trafficking in Africans. Angelina Osborne’s presentation looks at the “unsung heroes and heroines” – the enslaved men and women whose stories were not recorded whose acts of every day resistance, often overlooked were the real driving force that eventually brought slavery to an end. She also looks at the key rebellions that took place in the Caribbean, the narratives written by former slaves and how British women’s radical position was also key factors.
