CSEP Heritage Day – “The Journey”

24th October 2007

Saturday 27th of October 2007 lived up to the theme of “The Journey” from the doors opened at 12.00pm to the last visitor left at 7.00pm.

A fun packed informative day was had by all and the attendance far exceeded our expected outcome from all sections of the community attracting and embracing ALL generations.

The day kicked off where the first point of call on “The Journey” showcase was for all our visitors to step into the Cultural and Educational stalls Emporium. The Emporium was located in the foyer area of the Sir Philip Game Centre ( Morland Avenue, Croydon).

The stalls displayed heritage based items, gifts, books, traditional heritage demonstrations, interactive historical presentations and educational supports services.

THE CULTURAL STALLS WERE:

Following the Cultural Emporium ALL visitors were taken into the “Journey Dome” where they were treated to a selection of hot refreshments supplied by Friendz & Co and everyone chose a seat at a table of their choice named after different time lines in African & Caribbean History.

The Third highlight of the day was a presentation by Frederick Clarke of Mighty Men of Valour who gave an interactive presentation about our future expectations in Britain and how to reclaim our heritage. Read more about Mighty Men of Valour on www.mightymen.co.uk

The fourth & final part of Heritage Day was to showcase our young talent from CSEP & the local community again introduced by Donna Spence

  • Sherrie Wilson – a young poet who has won many awards such as Lambeth libraries Poetry competition for schools recited her own poems in line with The Bicentennial and the Journey
  • Carol Newell – Opera singer performed “Summer Time” which was composed by George Gershwin in 1953 for the black musical “Porgy & Bess”
  • CSEP Stilts Performers & Kyle Walcott – performed “Jonkonnu Play Mass” – an exhilarating, colourful, energetic, enigmatic, pulsating performance by a group of young people ranging from age 5 to 16. This was the outcome of their 10 week workshop which started in the summer by Kyle Walcott on how to perform on stilts. They also learnt about the historical heritage tradition of Jonkonnu performances in carnival as a result of slavery in the Caribbean.
