About Us

Croydon Supplementary Education Project (CSEP) is a not-for-profit registered charity (Registered Charity No 297019) established since 1982. CSEP provides supplementary education as a Saturday School for 150 children aged 4 – 18 years of age within the borough of Croydon, targeting the Black and Minority Ethnic (BME) Community.

CSEP provides supplementary education, supporting English, Maths and Science for Key Stages 1 to 4. CSEP provides an intervention service reacting to the current state of affairs - low educational attainment of BME students to correct the imbalance that currently exists in mainstream education, whilst supporting the cultural heritage and identity of its students and parents. CSEP ensures students receive educational support, enabling them to reach their full potential by developing skills and knowledge, thus making a difference to their lives and improving long-term life chances. The intervention work aims to ensure the educational imbalance does not occur in the future.

CSEP operates 30 Saturdays per year during term time and provides 2 hours of educational support, in class sizes of 10 students from the hours of 10:30am – 12:30pm (Year 1-7) and 1:00pm to 3:00pm (Year 8-11). Science lessons are available from 11:30am – 12:30pm for year group 9 and 11.

Mission Statement

All members of the CSEP are to be valued equally and will enjoy respect as individuals from diverse cultures. Our goal is the highest achievement of all kinds for all our students and adults.

We aim to celebrate their successes and to foster their development as independent learners and responsible citizens, in partnership with families and the wider community.

To help and advance the education of people growing up in a multi-racial society so as to develop their physical, mental and spiritual capacities that they may reach full maturity as individuals and as members of society and that their condition in life may be improved.

Aims

CSEP is a community education project providing extra support for students aged between 5 and 18. 130 students attend the project for two hours on Saturday and over 150 more are currently on our waiting list. CSEP also provides Life Long Learning to Adults.

Objectives

Our main focus at the project is on developing competence/excellence in the core subjects of the National Curriculum (Maths, English and Science) for children and Basic Skills for Adults.

In carefully planned lessons, each student is helped towards achieving his or her academic potential by offering:

  • A low student-teacher ratio
  • Carefully structured lessons
  • Reading programmes to ensure all students achieve minimum competence in literacy
  • Exam preparation (SATs, GCSEs and A Levels) and Accredited Courses

In addition to our academic focus, we encourage personal development and character building opportunities through a number of extra-curricular activities:

  • Youth exchange – exchange trips to Guyana, the Netherlands and Barbados - These trips were conducted in the past
  • Summer play scheme - This scheme operated for nearly 2 years from January 2003 to October 2004
  • Parent and student workshops – workshops on issues such as exclusions and exam preparation
  • Annual prize giving evening
